New Honda Civic Type-R

The new Honda Civic Type-R will become the fastest front-wheel drive car ever to lap the Nurburgring in Germany, the Japanese manufacturer has revealed.

It seems a rather premature statement, considering that the vehicle will not go on sale until 2015, however Honda has confirmed that the new model will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine which will produce 276bhp.

Moreover, the company have two years to develop the car further, although track testing has already begun.

Manabu Nishimae, president of Honda Europe, commented: “We have recently spent a week at the Nurburgring, carrying out extensive testing and we are on target, and have already set a time approaching the lap record.”

The current Nurburgring lap record for a front-wheel drive car is 8:07.97 (8 minutes and 7.97 seconds). It was set by the Renaultsport Megane 265.

It is unsure how much the Type-R will cost, but you can certainly expect to pay more than you would for a range-topping Civic, which will set you back around £27,000 brand new.

Used Civic and Type-R models can be picked up for a lot cheaper of course – you can find listings at CarSite.co.uk.
